Gift Voucher A
Introduction to Radio Controlled Helicopters (2 Hours) - £55

This is a two-hour lesson on flying radio controlled helicopters.  It is aimed at people who don't have a helicopter or a radio control flight simulator but might be interested in getting into the hobby.  The lesson comprises the following:

  • an introductory talk

  • a look at various types of helicopter that are on the market

  • a practice session on a radio controlled helicopter simulator

  • a flight with a real radio controlled helicopter (dual control)

  • a demonstration by an experienced pilot

Note that this lesson does not require the trainee to have BMFA insurance.

Gift Voucher B
Buddy Lesson - £30 per hour

This lesson is aimed at someone who does not have a radio controlled helicopter but who has some experience, either on a simulator or flying radio controlled aeroplanes.  These lessons aim to give the trainee more time actually flying a model than the 'Introduction to Radio Controlled Helicopters'.  These lessons are charged on an hourly basis and comprise the following:

  • an introductory talk

  • a practice session on a radio controlled helicopter simulator

  • flights with a real radio controlled helicopter (dual control)

Note that this lesson does not require the trainee to have BMFA insurance.

Gift Voucher C
Standard Lesson - £25 per hour

Our standard lessons are aimed at people who already have a radio controlled helicopter and want to learn to fly it.  These lessons are undertaken with the trainee's own model and are therefore slightly cheaper.  Depending on their experience, the standard lesson comprises the following:

  • an introductory talk

  • a safety check of the model

  • a short practice session on a radio controlled helicopter simulator

  • flight training with the trainee's model

Note that our standard lessons require the trainee to have BMFA insurance (see here for details).  If they do not have insurance, we cannot allow them to fly their model.

Please also note that if the trainee's model is not safe to fly (and cannot be made safe in the lesson), then we will not allow it to fly.  Unfortunately, due to the complexity of radio controlled helicopters, this is occasionally  In such cases, we are happy to refund for any unused time during the lesson or to re-book.

We don't sell books but a couple that we can recommend are:

All About Engines by Harry Higley (published by Harry B. Higley & Sons, Inc., P.O. Box 532, Glenwood, Illinois 60425, USA) There was no ISBN number.

This is an excellent book about model internal combustion engines.

A Comprehensive Guide to Model Helicopter Aerobatics by Russ Deakin (published by Traplet Publications Limited, Traplet House, Severn Drive, Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire, WR8 0JL, United Kingdom.)  ISBN 1 900371 19 7

Not quite as frightening as it sounds - this book is great for beginners and takes you all the way from buying your first helicopter up to simple aerobatics.

Twister Bell 47
The Twister Bell 47 is a small, ready-to-fly helicopter which can be flown indoors or outside on a calm day.  It comes complete with a transmitter and is very stable - an ideal gift for someone thinking of taking up the sport.  It's available in the pictured form or in Army Medevac colours.
